Drum Workshop

Drum Workshop (also referred to as DW) is a California-based drum and hardware manufacturing company. Their list of endorsers includes many professional drummers. Founded in 1972 as a teaching studio by current President Don Lombardi, it originally only offered private lessons and the occasional workshop. However, Don, along with student (and current Vice President) John Good, began a small drum equipment sales operation to cover the facility's operation costs. This operation soon created the first-ever DW product: The height-adjustable trap seat, which was envisioned by Don. The demand became so great that, after accepting an offer to purchase all of Camco's manufacturing equipment, the primary focus of the DW operation became drum hardware manufacturing. Camco Following this, the next big product introduced by DW was the 5000 series nylon strap bass drum pedal, which was essentially a Camco pedal with the DW name placed upon it. However, this basic design spawned the first double bass drum pedal, which allowed drummers using a single bass drum to take advantage of the bass drum speed formerly reserved to drummers using two individual bass drums. The double bass pedal was soon joined by rotating-base and cable remote hi-hat stands. After additional growth and expansion, the first full DW endorser was found in Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe, after he tried out a prototype DW drumset when he came to the shop to get his pedals adjusted. DW has since expanded into larger facilities in Oxnard, California, and has grown to oversee two new companies: the value-oriented Pacific Drums and Percussion (PDP) and percussion manufacturer Gon Bops. Their lineup now includes 4000, 5000, 7000, and 9000 series pedals; 5000, 6000, and 9000 series hardware; and a nearly infinite spectrum of drums that can be custom-ordered in many unique combinations of wood, color, and size.

2000

This article is about the year 2000. For other uses of 2000, see 2000 (number) or 2000 (breakdancing move). 2000 (MM) is a leap year starting on Saturday of the Gregorian calendar. Popular culture also holds the year 2000 as the first year of the 21st century and the 3rd millennium. By strict interpretation of the Gregorian Calendar, however, this distinction falls to the year 2001. This is due to the fact that the first century began with the year 1, and there does not exist a year zero. The first century (or first 100 years AD) was from January 1, in the year one (1 AD) through December 31, in the year one-hundred (100 AD). The second century began on January 1, in the year one-hundred and one (101 AD). The year 2000 is also marked as:
- The International Year for a Culture of Peace.

Alien Ant Farm

Alien Ant Farm was formed in the USA in 1996 as a grunge and Alternative metal group.

Selected history

In the late 1990s, the band released their underground debut album, Greatest Hits. The album went on to win Best Independent Album in the L.A. Music Awards. In 2000, after forging a friendship with rock band Papa Roach, Alien Ant Farm signed with DreamWorks SKG for their first studio album ANThology. The band began touring in 2001. In this year, their cover of the Michael Jackson song, Smooth Criminal, was a #1 single in Australia and New Zealand and a #3 single in the UK. Their following single Movies was a Top 5 hit in the UK and a Top 20 hit in New Zealand. In May 2002, the band was involved in a bus accident while touring in Spain. The driver was killed, and lead singer Dryden Mitchell suffered a fractured C2 vertebrae, the same injury that crippled actor Christopher Reeve. Alien Ant Farm soon returned to the studio to work on their next album called truANT, which was released in 2003 produced by Stone Temple Pilots' Robert and Dean DeLeo. The video for These Days, the first single from the album, was filmed on top of a nearby building during the Red Carpet at 2003 BET Awards. Glow has been a mainstream radio success, while also achieving long lasting top 20 success in New Zealand. In 2004, guitarist Terry Corso split with the band citing "irreconcilable differences". Joe Hill was named the new guitarist in 2005. They have completed the new album but speculation is that there are issues with Geffen, that prevent the release of the new album.

Joey Castillo is the current drummer for Queens of the Stone Age. He joined the band in 2002 after the departure of Dave Grohl. Castillo previously played drums for eight years in Danzig. Previous bands: :Wasted Youth :Danzig :Goatsnake

Brian Mantia

Brian "Brain" Mantia is a drummer. He has played with bands like Primus and Guns N' Roses, and with other popular performers such as Buckethead and Tom Waits. Drummer Brian “Brain" Mantia has played with some of rock's more cult/fringe artists (Praxis, Primus, Tom Waits, Buckethead, Godflesh), as well as more mainstream/renown ones (Guns N' Roses). Raised in the South Bay city of Cupertino, CA, Mantia became interested in such ‘groove heavy' artists as James Brown, Led Zeppelin, and Jimi Hendrix early on, but it wasn't until he was 16 years old that Mantia began playing drums. Shortly thereafter, Mantia acquired the nickname “Brain" while playing in a high school concert band, due to his obsession with the complex Anthony Cirone book, "Portraits in Rhythm." Mantia continued to perfect his drumming skills, by studying at such music schools as the Percussion Institute of Technology in Hollywood. The mid ‘80s saw Mantia join the San Francisco Bay Area funk-rock band, the Limbomaniacs, who broke up later in the decade, but reformed to issue a lone full-length in 1990, Stinky Grooves. From there, Mantia played with a variety of other outfits, including M.I.R.V. (Cosmodrome, Feeding Time on Monkey Island), MCM and the Monster (Collective Emotional Problems), and Tom Waits (Bone Machine), before co-forming the funk/experimental supergroup, Praxis. Included in the group were Parliament-Funkadelic veterans Bootsy Collins (bass) and Bernie Worrell (keyboards), as well as masked guitarist Buckethead and producer Bill Laswell -- resulting in countless releases throughout the ‘90s (including such standouts as Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis, Transmutation Live, and Warzsawa, among countless others). Mantia continued to work with Buckethead even outside of Praxis -- playing on such solo Buckethead albums as Giant Robot and Monsters and Robots. The late ‘90s saw Mantia appear on releases by Godflesh (Songs of Love and Hate, Love and Hate in Dub), and longtime friends, Primus (whom Mantia was briefly a member of in 1989, before a broken foot led to his exit). His second go-around with Primus proved more fruitful, as Mantia toured extensively with the trio and played on such albums as The Brown Album, Rhinoplasty, and Anti-Pop. Already boasting quite an impressive musical resume, it was about to get even greater, as Axl Rose invited Mantia to join his overhauled version of Guns N' Roses (at the insistence of Buckethead, who was brought onboard as Slash's replacement). Mantia appeared with the group throughout sporadic live dates in 2001 (the Rock in Rio III Festival) and 2002 (the MTV Video Music Awards), while continuing to lay down tracks for the oft-delayed new Guns N' Roses studio release, Chinese Democracy." source: All Music Guide Mantia appears on the song "Circles" on Brian Transeau's 2003 release Emotional Technology. Stephen Perkins

Stephen Perkins (born September 13, 1967 in Los Angeles, California) is a Jewish-American musician and songwriter. He plays drums and percussion. His most famous project is Jane's Addiction. Following the disolution of Jane's Addiction, Perkins continued to play with frontman Perry Farrell in the rock band Porno for Pyros. His own project is called Banyan and in the 1990s he was involved in Lil' Pit with Mike Watt. In 1991, he appeared as percussion player on Rage Against the Machine's first record. In addidtion to Banyan, Perkins is currently working with Ex-Jane's guitarist Dave Navarro, bass player Chris Chaney (Who played bass for the last Jane's Addiction studio album Strays), and singer/guitarist Steve Isaacs on a new project, entitled The Panic Channel. Perkins was also involved with members of Suicidal Tendencies in their Infectious Grooves side project, as well as Hellride, a Los Angeles-based Stooges cover band. His drum style is considered to be exotic because of polyrhythms and African elements.

Jane's Addiction

Jane's Addiction was an American band, named in reference to Jane Bainter, a (now ex-) heroin addict who was a housemate of the band. The band formed in the late 1980s, dissolved in the early 1990s, and returned in the early 2000s. The band was influenced by punk, Gothic rock, metal, funk, hard rock, and psychedelic styles; the lead singer once described the band as a cross between Duke Ellington and Bad Brains.

History

Formed out of the ashes of frontman Perry Farrell's previous band, Psi-com, Jane's Addiction are often compared to iconic '70s rockers Led Zeppelin. In the summer of 1985, Farrell was searching for a new bass player for the faltering Psi-com when he was introduced to Eric Avery. Although Farrell and Avery worked well together, Psi-com disbanded before they managed to play live with their new bassist. Later, Eric's sister introduced the duo to Stephen Perkins. Following this fortuitous introduction, Perkins suggested his friend (and Dizastre bandmate) Dave Navarro might be a suitable guitar player for the new band, dubbed Jane's Addiction (in honor of Farrell's housemate, Jane Bainter. With this lineup, the band released three albums: Jane's Addiction, Nothing's Shocking, and Ritual de lo Habitual. Though the band had only released two studio albums and one live (Jane's Addiction), their effect on the rock and alternative music scenes was enormous. They became the poster children for a new wave of artful and thoughtful rockers who were eschewing the confinements of commercial rock music and stretching to express themselves both musically and theatrically. In their hey-day, Farrell created Lollapalooza, the alternative rock festival that revolutionized the North American concert promotion world by bringing together an ecclectic mix of musicians, exhibitors, and attractions for a high energy weekend of music and alternative lifestyles. The "Ripple" single that the band produced for the Grateful Dead tribute album Deadicated was the final studio track for this incarnation of the band. Internal strife and rampant drug usage lead the band to break up in 1991 after playing two nights at Hawaii's Aloha Tower; with Perkins and Farrell performing the final show completely [http://www.notfornothing.net/one-percent/faq/4%7Efaq_details.html naked], without incident. The band members pursued other projects in the 1990s. Farrell and Perkins formed another band Porno for Pyros which had some success. The band briefly reformed in 1997 for the Jane's Relapse tour, with Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea replacing Avery, after he declined an invitation to rejoin the band. Four years later, Jane's Addiction rose from the ashes again for a full blown tour. Again, Avery declined involvement. With Flea busy with the Chili Peppers, Porno for Pyros bassist Martyn LeNoble was brought in to fill the gap. Following the success of this tour, the band decided to record a follow-up album to 1990's Ritual De Lo Habitual and brought in Chris Chaney to replace LeNoble on bass. They entered the studio with legendary producer Bob Ezrin in 2001, recording as a band for the first time in over ten years. The result was their final album,Strays. The band spent 2003 on an extensive worldwide touring in support of Strays, including, in a homecoming of sorts, a summer headliner slot in a reincarnated Lollapalooza US tour. Following the 2003 tour, Jane's Addiction broke up again, according to guitarist Dave Navarro's site in June 2004. Although details surrounding the band's demise are sparse, Navarro claimed that the reasons for the breakup were essentially the same as they were in 1991. Navarro, Perkins, and Chaney have since formed a new band, The Panic Channel, with singer Steve Isaacs. They are currently recording their debut album. Perry Farrell has also moved onto a new project entitled The Satellite Party and unveiled material at Lollapalooza 2005. In the future, there will be a release of a Best of Jane's Addiction, tentatively scheduled for January 24, 2006.

Announcement of the 2004 break-up

The following was posted on Navarro's site in June 2004: State of the Union OK. We know we can't avoid this anymore so we will give it our best shot. What's the deal? The deal is that it simply didn't work out. Sometimes things just don't work out. In all honesty, we have broken up and rejoined roughly four times over the years. Perhaps that should shed some light as to where we are now. We really don't know. We do know that we really gave it everything we had this time and we actually made a really great record after so many years of silence. That was definitely a great thing and we are all proud of it. We were able to do a lot of shows and travel and see the world again. We had some amazing times. Why didn't it work out? So many reasons. Some of them over 15 years old, some of them new and none of them worth mentioning. Maybe we are just a volatile combination. Maybe that is why we were so great. The bottom line is that we are all extremely creative and motivated people and I know we will all continue to create and work on many different projects. After 20 years, just like in any relationship, you have your highs and lows and some amazing memories that can never be replaced. We were able to create great music together, and for that... We feel blessed. But sometimes relationships don't work, no matter how much time or energy you put into them... and at that point... you realize it is healthier to go your separate ways than to keep trying to recreate the magic of the early years. Sometimes people grow apart in the relationship, it is nobody's fault really... just a fact of life... an inevitable creative dissolution. Sometimes the best creative relationships are the most combustible and they aren't meant to last forever. We know this doesn't answer all of your questions, but hopefully it answers some of them. We would personally like to say, "thank you" for all of the love and support you have shown us over the years, we greatly appreciate it and we love you. Stephen, Dave & Chris
